How it works

What actually happens when you tap try-on

A plain description of the mechanics: what the AI needs from you, what it renders well, what it genuinely cannot tell you, and where your photo goes.

What the app needs

  1. A base body — yours or a model’s. One clear, full-length photo of yourself is enough, set once and reused for every try-on. If you would rather not upload a photo at all, pick one of the built-in male or female models instead and skip this entirely.
  2. Garments. One piece, or a whole outfit layered across seven slots — outerwear, top, dress, bottoms, shoes, scarf, hat — taken from your closet or photographed from something you are considering buying.
  3. A moment. Generation runs in the cloud rather than on your phone, so each look takes a little time to come back.

What the AI is doing

In broad terms: it reads your pose and proportions from your photo, separates the garment from its background, and re-renders that garment onto your shape, matching the lighting of your original photo.

The important consequence is that the result is a generated image, not a photograph of you wearing the item. Nothing is measured. Nothing is physically simulated. It is a very good visual guess, and it should be read as one.

What it gets right

What it cannot tell you

Being straight about the limits, because they matter before you spend money:

  • It is not a fit or size predictor. It will not tell you whether a medium fits. Use the retailer's size chart for that.
  • Fine detail can drift. Small logos, printed text, and intricate patterns are the first things to degrade — check the product photo for those.
  • Structured and very loose garments are harder. Tailoring, stiff fabrics, and heavy drape are the difficult cases for every AI try-on system, not just this one.
  • It does not judge fabric or quality. Weight, texture, and how something moves are outside what a still render can show.

Getting a result worth looking at

The base photo does most of the work. If your try-ons look off, this is almost always why:

Where your photo goes

The shortest answer: if you use a built-in model, no photo of you is ever uploaded. What follows applies when you do use your own.

Photos are uploaded and processed in the cloud — this kind of generation is too heavy to run on a phone. They are stored under your account so you do not have to re-upload for every look.

They are not sold, and there are no ads in the app. Full detail is in the privacy policy.

How this differs from a shop's try-on button

Retailer try-on widgets only show you that retailer's catalogue, and stop existing once you close the tab. WearWhat works the other way round: your own wardrobe is the catalogue, and anything you are considering buying can be tried against it. The point is not to sell you the garment — it is to tell you whether you will actually wear it.

What it costs

The app is free to download and comes with a starter allowance of AI generations, which is enough to see whether the results are useful to you. A subscription — with a free-trial option shown in the app — unlocks continued use. Local pricing is shown in the app and in the store.
